Top tips about living in Surrey and Guildford
So you’ve chosen to study abroad in Surrey – congratulations on a great choice. The University of Surrey is a high-ranking university known worldwide, but you may know less about where it is located. Situated just under London, Surrey is a luscious green county with a long and exciting history. Here are the top things you need to know before moving here.
Surrounded by nature
Just outside of the bustling metropolis that is London, Surrey is a place full of nature and greenery. Known as the most wooded county in England, it is easy to find beautiful scenery. One of the most famous green areas is Richmond Park – a beautiful and historical park joining London and Surrey. As well as being a great space to relax, Richmond Park also has a unique history as a 17th century deer park.
Closer to the university campus is Box Hill – a large and beautiful nature reserve where you can enjoy a variety of long country works. The perfect place to unwind from a long week of studying!
Close to London
In addition to the many green spaces around Surrey, you are less than an hour away from London. Many people who work in the City of London choose to live in Surrey and commute in to work each day. This is what is known as a ‘commuter county’. As well as the career prospects that being close to London brings, the proximity to London also provides lots of weekend and evening fun. Enjoy British culture and history by visiting the capital’s many museums and galleries, or just experience the different vibes of famous London neighbourhoods like Camden and Chelsea.
A student city
As the home of the University of Surrey campus, Guildford is a vibrant and exciting place to live. When you’re not studying, there are plenty of things to do in Guildford. Guildford is a market town with excellent shopping opportunities. You can find the usual UK stores on the High Street, whilst North Street is a diverse place for shopping which even incorporates a traditional market. There are also plenty of other entertainment opportunities such as restaurants, swimming pools and skate parks. For something truly unique, visit the trampoline park or even the ski slopes.
Rich history
One of the main benefits of studying in the UK, and particularly in Surrey, is the history. By living in Surrey, you are perfectly situated to experience some of the highlights of British history. King Henry VIII, one of history’s most famous kings, lived in Surrey in the royal palace of Hampton Court. Hampton Court is situated on the bank of the River Thames, making a trip here a great day out.
